NO Walls references the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (also known as EZLN or the Zapatista Army of National Liberation), an indigenous and non indigenous collective founded in 1983, that is fighting FOR autonomy and self determination and AGAINST capitalism and colonization in Mexico and globally. EZLN continues to this day to organize against state violence including the destruction of native peoples and land by paramilitary. For this reason many chose to wear face masks to protect their identities in the struggle for liberation and survival. The cactus bodies represent the connection between all life forms and contradict the distinction between plant and animal, life and matter. These divisions along with borders, walls, races, and species, are not truths but they are firmly held beliefs used to justify oppression and violence. Our bodies, like cactus plants are resourceful places of endurance, we survive even in the most extreme conditions. After 524 years of colonization in the Americas native people of this land continue to survive and resist.
